 The seats are excellent. It's hard to find a better mix of comfort and support for typical driving. The optional sport seats in some luxury brands might ultimately be better, but they are much harder to settle into not to mention they are usually expensive. The fabric that comes standard in the 2.4i resists stains. Dog owners may be better served by the leather, however, because dog hair can get imbedded in the fabric upholstery.
The fold-flat front passenger seat is a valuable feature. Standard on the wagons, the front seatback can fold forward to roughly the same level as the folded rear seat and cargo floor. This adds three feet to the length of items that can be carried within the car. And as far as we could tell, this feature does nothing to diminish the seat's comfort.Volvo's WHIPS whiplash-limiting seat is designed to reduce the chance of a neck injury in a rear-end collision: During a rear-end impact, the seatbacks move rearward to reduce acceleration forces on the occupant's back and neck, while the headrest pushes forward and upward slightly to meet the neck and head as they are thrust backward. For 2010, the headrests now adjust vertically as well.

But how does it drive? T3 were granted exclusive access at the Good wood Festival of Speed. The V60 feels every inch the £47,000 luxury car. The cabin is spacious, comfortable and packed with tech. The large TFT dashboard displays battery charge, speed and the split between battery and diesel power while the drive buttons are mounted below the center column.

Volvo’s ethos follows in the car’s specifications. Up front there’s a 2.4 liter, five-cylinder diesel engine married to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Producing 215 horsepower, it is supplemented by a 7 kilowatt electric motor, which enables the V60 Plug-in Hybrid to enter all-electric all-wheel drive mode when required.
Driving the rear wheels is a 50 kilowatt peak electric motor, making the V60 Plug-in Hybrid Wagon a through-the-road hybrid. Combined, the entire drivetrain system can produce an impressive 472 foot-pounds of torque, and, in power mode, accelerate the car from 0-62 mph in just 6.2 seconds.
All that torque comes in handy for towing too: Volvo claims the V60 Plug-in Hybrid Wagon can easily tow up to 1.9 tons, although fuel economy won’t be anywhere near the  headline-grabbing 1.9 l/100km (124 mpg) it has achieved on the European test cycle. The only major downside we could argue is that the gearbox is a little less snappy than we've come to expect. It's not a double-clutch model - although Volvo does this tech in other cars - so don't expect that sort of response. It's still very good, though, even with the traditional automatic. Even so, there's plenty of speed here, and most people buying this car will find it enjoyable to drive, but snappy when it's needed.

The plug-in hybrid system can operate in three driver-selectable modes: in Pure, the crossover runs on electric power only for up to 35 miles; in Hybrid mode, it operates like a traditional hybrid vehicle; and in Power, the gas engine and electric motor combine for maximum performance. Then there's the hybrid mode. No surprises here really: the car does low speed and low rev stuff on the battery, but the diesel engine kicks in if you require more than the 70hp electric motor can deliver. As with most hybrids, braking can create electricity but the car's engine will also charge the power pack to 40 per cent of its maximum. We asked if this put a strain on diesel economy, and were assured that it didn't. The final mode, power, is designed to make the car go as fast as possible. We like this feature, because it means that this car is still fun to drive and on those occasions where you want to enjoy performance, it's just a button press away. The diesel engine has plenty of grunt too, it's Volvo's powerful 2.4 litre 215hp effort. The company says it will get you to 60mph in a shade under 7 seconds, and in our test we certainly managed to haul ourselves to that speed in little or no time. We weren't allowed to push it harder though, because the car we drove was still bedding in.

Volvo has also got a smartphone app that allows you to monitor the car while it's charging, as well as let you turn on the air conditioning or heater. What that means is that you'll get in to a cabin that's the right temperature, so you can conserve the battery power of the car for the actual driving. In the case of the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (F4Rt), CO2 emissions have fallen to 198g/km (a saving of 6g/km), equivalent to fuel consumption of 8.5 litres/100km (down 0.3 litres/100km).
